Windows 7
« on: May 17, 2009, 10:33:32 AM »
Ran across this article, which is from November, and thought I'd post it since it implies that Windows 7 is due out this year:

Top 10 Things to Look Forward to in Windows 7.

The last OS I got involved in was XP...I've never seen Vista...so I don't know if this is an improvement over Vista or not.

i quite like vista. this is the 2nd pc i've had with it. granted it's an arse to begin with cos every damn thing is in a different place but you soon get used to it (i now cant find my way round the xp system at work). and if you disable UAC and get rid of the widget side-bar it's even better and much faster - the side bar is ridiculously cpu intensive.

aside form that though...

Windows 7 is far better than Vista imo. Windows 7 is actually backwards compatible for most things (unlike Vista when it was released) and it isn't super slow on a system. It is what Vista should have been and wasn't. I absolutely hate Vista with a passion and I had to use it for around 5 months at work until I forcibly brought my home computer in to use instead. I've been using Windows since '95 on and have used pretty well every flavor of it, and Vista is the only version that I can't stand.

I run Windows 7 on Bootcamp on my iMac. I did have to pay the extra $200 for the software, but Win7 runs great. I can't say how it runs on a PC, but it is fine on the Mac. I only boot into it to play Aion (that's the main reason I bought it), but that is a graphics intensive video game and it doesn't lag on me.

ok, so i wondered if any of my Tri-Continental Friends can help with a wee 7MC problem i have. i have mpeg files which played perfectly well in Vista, however i have had to install the piece of crap that is Windows 7 on my media pc and they just don't work!! i get it to play the video but no sound... but only in 7MC and Media Player (12 i think?).

the files play fine in external programmes such as vlc player. but i want to watch them in media center as that is how my pc is set up.

i have tried installing the windows 7 codec pack but it didnt have any effect. i then downloaded the shark007 windows 7 codec pack but it wont work either. i have even made sure my drivers are up-to-date.

it seems to be a 7MC problem. i have looked at a few forums and have seen a few folk having the same problem as me but i have not come across a fix yet.

anyone have any ideas?

I was wondering if anyone would notice.  :))

Not I.  I'm still on XP, and have no idea what 7MC is.  Sorry.

7MC = windows 7 Media Center... like XP-MCE but newer

and i still haven't figured this out. i've since uninstalled the windows7 codec pak and the shark007 codec pack and re-installed the k-lite one. things work a bit better but i still can't play certain mpegs in media center. so i have to tell MC to open them in VLC player which is an ok workaround except that for the life of me i cant figure out how to get VLC to close after it's played a file.

it needs to close in order for MC to re-open.. and sure, i can close it manually, but would you want to keep closing a programme after every file just so it can open another one?

it's a pain in the arse.

I read about this somewhere. Windows 7 just will not accept those in it's built in stuff for some reason.
